This Weeks Word is Worth 16 SCRABBLE Points!

Zarf
noun-z/ɑ/rf

A holder, usually of ornamental metal, for a coffee cup without a handle. Origin:1830-1840; Arabic-ẓarf =vessel, sheath.

I can see this becoming a new "buzz" word for Geek book characters.
Slang Dictionary - zarf n. - An ugly and repellent male. That zarf is Martin and he pulls nothing but As in school. This is a really kewl word if you're writing historical or a culinary fiction involving beverages. For some reason, I just love this word. I hope the new "buzz" word for ugly and repellent FEMALE isn't zarf's counterpart barf - lol

Zarfs were generally made in metals, including brass and silver, but examples in wood, ivory and tortoiseshell are also known. At the beginning of the 19th century, Geneva was once world’s capital for luxury goods, and the jewelers and gold-box makers there created the most precious examples of the zarf in gold, enamel, and jewels for the Ottoman court. This object is one of only two zarfs known that are almost entirely formed of gems—this one of rubies, offset by large diamonds & military trophies topped by the Turkish crescent. This particular lovely sold at auction for $175,000!!

Thank you so much for stopping by. Don't forget to use ZARF if you play scrabble! Hope to see you next week!
