Breathing Exercises for Stress Management
Breathing exercises are an ideal way to relieve stress in that they’re fast, simple, free, and can be performed by just about anyone. They can also be done anywhere and at virtually any time. These factors make stress relief breathing exercises one of my most popular and convenient tension tamers. Here’s how basic controlled breathing works:
Sit or stand in a relaxed position.
Slowly inhale through your nose, counting to five in your head.
Let the air out from your mouth, counting to eight in your head as it leaves your lungs. Repeat several times. That’s it!
As you breathe, let your abdomen expand outward, rather than raising your shoulders. This is a more relaxed and natural way to breathe, and helps your lungs fill themselves more fully with fresh air, releasing more “stale” air.
Healthy Snacks for Writers
* Yogurt (mix with milled flaxseed)
* Individually-sized packages of cottage cheese
* Fresh mozzarella cheese
* Pistachios, macadamias, pecans, walnuts, and other nuts (either lightly salted or raw)
* Natural fruit rolls / fruit leathers (for when I really want a sugar kick)
* Mini dill pickles
* Berries and grapes (although you could keep almost any fruit around)
* 100 calorie serving sizes of lite fruit cocktail
* Mini whole grain bagels (and a light cream cheese or no sugar added fruit preserves)
* Whole grain tortilla chips and salsa for when I need a saltier snack and want to avoid things like potato chips
Stay away from those diet colas, iced Americanos, and chocolate coffee beans. A healthier way to reduce stress is to eat foods that increase energy production, which will help your body to cope with the deadlines and lofty goals. Focusing on B Vitamins, magnesium and ribose (ribose is the key building block for energy) is an important part of stress management for writers
Color Me A Writer
Not everyone has a special room set aside for writing, but if you do, here are some colors that will make your writing life inspiring and relaxing.
If you're looking to feel creative, go for a plum or burgundy color. This is perfect for writers and the complex color can inspire new ideas.
Wanting to feel energized? Go for green. It will remind you of the bright fresh outdoors and can get you in an active and energetic mood.
If you're edging to a more calm feeling, try blue. It's the best color for writing. The cool undertones help you focus and concentrate.
If you're in a dark and soulless room, consider adding a bright painting or poster of an outdoor scene with lots of color, sunshine, and natural scenes.
One thing I do every day to relieve stress is engage for twenty minutes with my Chi Machine. I first tried it five years ago when my daughter bought one and raved about its benefits. Like many, I was skeptical, doubtful it could accomplish all the benefits it touted. But...eager to relive stress because of my writing schedule, I tried it for a week, and then I fell in love.
There is an initial outlay of money but I'm a firm believer the advantages it provides far outweighs the cost. If your budget allows, please consider investing in a Chi Machine. There are several on the market. At the bottom of this article is the make and model I have. And, yes, I do use it every day.
The Chi Machine
The machine has an ankle cradle on the top which oscillates (moves from side to side), at approximately 140/minute - a multiple of the average pulse rate (72) and the cerebro-spinal pump rhythm (12) synchronized with your heart rate, blood pressure and spinal alignment - creating a balanced, rhythmic, relaxing wave-like motion throughout your entire body, thereby oxygenating every cell and tissue via blood circulation, thus enhancing your metabolic rate, aiding detoxification via the lymphatic system, aligning your spine and activating the autonomic nervous system
Benefits of a Chi Machine
* More energy; a greater sense of well-being
* Stronger and more limber spine and joints
* Firming and toning of thighs, hips, buttocks
* Sounder and more restful sleep
